Many teachers and parents face difficulties in keeping their children's books in good condition. Using glossy paper usually helps, as it is much harder to tear or be damaged from water. Unfortunately, we cannot use glossy paper for the Qaidah, Tajwid, Dua and Arabic books as it is difficult to write on. None-glossy paper allows teachers and parents to mark mistakes and log dates and comments in the books. Additionally, non-glossy paper does not reflect light as much as glossy paper, which can make it more comfortable to read for extended periods of time.
We advise teachers and parents to teach children from a young age, the etiquettes and importance of respecting their books as well as all the materials used for gaining knowledge.
Here are some tips on how to help children keep their books safe:
- Teach children to respect books: Books are valuable resources, it's important to teach children to respect them. Emphasise the importance of treating books with care and not writing or drawing in them.
- Teach children how to handle books properly: Teach children to handle books gently, turn pages carefully, and avoid bending or folding pages. Demonstrate how to hold a book correctly to avoid putting too much pressure on the spine. Also demonstrate how to place books in a bag/backpack safely without bending the pages.
- Provide a designated storage space for books: Designate a specific shelf or bookcase for your children's books. Teach them to put their books back in their designated space after use to prevent misplacement.
- Use book covers: Book covers can help protect books from wear and tear. There are various types of book covers, including adhesive covers and slip-on covers. Consider using clear covers so that the book's cover design is still visible.
- Keep books away from food and drink: Food and drink spills can damage books, so make sure your children eat and drink away from their books.
- Monitor book borrowing and lending: Teach children to take care of books they have borrowed off others and to return them on time.
- Inform parents early: Teachers should inform parents of damages in children's books as early as possible so they can try to resolve it together before its tool late!
It is completely understandable that young children will find it difficult to take care of their books. The best we can do is try!
